"On-Ground" Call-Centre Scams: A New Trick to Watch Out For

About the article

A medical-faculty PhD student lost more than 10 million baht to a call-centre gang. Callers posing as a mobile operator and then as police claimed his identity had been used for fraud, sent a fake bankbook, accused him of being a money mule, threatened prison, and kept him on a video call all day. He withdrew cash using a script, borrowed from his parents with a false story, and handed cash to collectors three times (6 million baht) plus 11 transfers, before telling his parents and going to the police. Police say gangs are moving to 'on-ground' cash collection and gold purchases to dodge bank identity checks and account freezes. The AOC 1441 centre has returned over 570 million baht in eight months, and police urge victims to stay calm and report to 1441 immediately.
