Solar for the People: Borrow for Panels, Repay with the Power You Sell
About the article
On 27 October 2026 the Thai cabinet approved 'Solar for the People', a scheme to help one million households install solar systems. The government gives 50,000 baht per household. GSB, GHB and BAAC lend the rest at a fixed 2.5% a year over 7 years, with no collateral and a limit of 140,000 baht (90,000 baht to repay after the subsidy). Surplus electricity is sold to the MEA or PEA at 2.20 baht per unit and goes towards the principal first, so in some cases the monthly payment can be zero. Applicants must be 20 or over, be residential electricity users, pass a utility check, and not have claimed solar tax relief before. The Ministry of Finance says the scheme is best value for homes with bills of 3,500–4,000 baht a month. Savings continue for about 13 years after the loan ends.
